Maxwell Street Blues

I'll never forget the day Nate Duncan walked into our office a few years ago to purchase copies of Near West Side Stories, Carolyn Eastwood's book that chronicles his and three other individuals' experiences living in, working in, and trying to save the old Maxwell Street area from various encroachments of those more powerful. It was like a 6'5" angel had walked into our office--his presence was so kind, open, grand. Actually 70-something, I had guessed him to be about 50. Duncan died last Tuesday. The Trib and Sun-Times tell his wonderful story, but only hint at his remarkable human qualities that surely touched those in his neighborhood on a daily basis.
