"Jane" Tops Women & Children First's List

Jason Behrends reports in Chicago Subtext that our What Would Jane Say? City-Building Women and a Tale of Two Chicago, by Janice Metzger, leads last week's list of top sellers at local indie bookseller Women & Children First.

When people first see or hear the title they've asked: Jane Byrne (first woman mayor of Chicago)? Jane Jacobs (visionary urbanist, author of The Death and Life of Great American Cities, 1961)? Jane Austen (okay, Austen mania does not extend that far)?

Jane, is Jane Addams, and the context is the early twentieth century, the era of Daniel Burnham and the Plan of Chicago.

Our Urban Times

Our Urban Times, the brainchild of editor/publisher Elaine Coorens, is an impressive and ambitious online newspaper stepping in to fill the neighborhood newspaper needs of Bucktown, East Village, Noble Square, Ukrainian Village, West Town, and Wicker Park now that The Chicago Journal cut its paper for those communities. "Without communications, there is no community," she says. Check out the extent of the communications she has in mind: Her publication covers city services, environmental issues, libraries, faith, education, garden, fashion, real estate, and at least a couple dozen other areas. Have your eyeballs and local advertising take a look...
